Eating Disorders
What are EATING DISORDERS AND BODY IMAGE CONCERNS?
Eating disorders are a group of potentially serious conditions involving preoccupation with weight, body image and food. It involves problematic eating-insufficient or excessive food intake, distorted body image, and other body image concerns.
Treatment for Eating Disorders
Of utmost importance with these disorders is assessing the general medical condition first and coordinating with other medical professionals for nutritional and weight stabilization if necessary. Cognitive therapy is used to identify emotional triggers, and challenge self-critical attitudes about weight, food, and problematic eating. Psychodynamic therapy will explore family dynamics, both past and present, and how they have contributed to disordered thinking and eating. Identifying emotional triggers to problematic eating and examining how those with these disorders use food to deal with uncomfortable feelings is important as is looking into the meaning of food and their transformed body image and size.
