Sexual Compulsivity
What is SEXUAL COMPULSIVITY?
Psychologically similar to other addictive disorders, such as substance abuse, sexual compulsivity, sexual addiction, or sexual dependency describes the behavior of a person who has an exaggerated sex drive or obsession with sex. Sex and the thought of sex tend to dominate the sex addicts thinking making it difficult to engage in healthy relationships. This disorder is not yet classified, but is conceptualized as an addictive or anxiety disorder.
Treatment for Sexual Compulsivity
Like other addictive disorders, treatment involves a combination of participating in 12 step programs, psychodynamic psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. It will be important to work towards changing problematic behaviors and finding alternative strategies to gratify feelings that were previously gratified by the dysfunctional behaviors. This will involve channeling this energy into more acceptable outlets.
